1 Samuel 2:2 - 1 Samuel 2:2 - 1 Samweli 2:2

1 Samuel 2:2

Amen

1 Samuel 2:2

2“There is none holy like the LORD:

for there is none besides you;

there is no rock like our God.

Context is everything.  If we take things out of context we bend and mold them to our thoughts and desires.  We apply those things to us.  Very rarely do we find something and apply the context to someone else.

This verse is in the context of Hannah bringing her weaned son, Samuel, to the temple with a thanksgiving offering and leaving Samuel with the priest, Eli in fulfillment of her vow to God.

This story is so heartrending.  Hannah has been abused and mocked by her husband’s other wife because she cannot have children.  Then, in the midst of her misery she cries out to God that she may bear a son.  God grants her petition and she sets the timeframe for when she will take the child to the Temple at Shiloh.  After she weans Samuel, she takes him and her offering to Shiloh and she presents the child to the priest, Eli.

She then breaks into this prayer of thanksgiving that reads like a song (1 Samuel 2 ).

Knowing this context makes this verse all the more powerful.  Hannah’s full recognition and devotion to God is on display.  She acknowledges God’s holiness and His steadfastness.  In the face of being degraded and mocked for not bearing children, she knows that God is in control.

Hannah’s unwavering faithfulness and reliance on God is a great testimony.  Even in the instance of giving up what she had desired most, she recognizes the awesomeness of God.

God does not ask nor require Hannah to give Samuel to Eli.  It is a vow that she took upon herself.  She gives him up as a sign of her self-imposed obligation to God.  She knows that it is only by the power of God that she had Samuel.

At the time that she gave Samuel to Eli she must have been full of mixed emotions, but the one that is dominant is acknowledging the holiness and steadfastness of God.

Prayer:

Lord, I pray that I may always acknowledge your holiness and steadfastness in my life.  When decisions are hard, when times are difficult, and when I face having to give up something that I treasure.  You are and always will be the holy God and the assurance of your unchanging nature are all I need to sustain me.

Amen

1 Samweli 2:2

2“Hakuna yeyote aliye mtakatifu kama Bwana,

hakuna mwingine zaidi yako;

Mungu haombi wala haitaji Hana ampe Eli Samweli.

Amen

Hebrews 4:12

12For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

When we are confronted with The Truth, we have two choices:  1)  we accept it and change to adapt to it or 2) we reject it and continue to ignore it.  There is no third choice.

In recent years it has become fashionable to talk about truth being subjective.  The phrase “my truth” has come into daily usage.  In all honesty, there is no “personal truth.”  There is simply The Truth.  It does not change.  It does not bend to the whimsy of fashion or trends.  It does not contort itself to justify anything.  It is Truth that there are two sexes - those who have XX chromosomes are female; those who have XY chromosomes are male.  This is true throughout the animal kingdom.  It is also true for over half of the plant kingdom.  It is The Truth that to procreate, a male mammal must have intercourse with a female mammal.  No male mammal can bear a child.  It is only the female who has the organs to do so.  These are Truths.

God is the author of Truth.  There are absolutes.  Calling an apple a tomato does not make the apple a tomato.  There is right and wrong.  There is sin and there is righteousness.

We come to understand and know The Truth by reading and studying the Bible.  How do we know something we read or study in the Bible is true?  Because it says it is True.  Many call this circular reasoning.  In a manner it is.  But we also know the Bible is True because of its longevity.  Some parts of the Bible were written over 4000 years ago.  The Bible is the most studied book in history.  Many non-believers have spent their whole careers trying to disprove things in the Bible.  There are many today who say that the Bible is just old-fashioned and out of date.  Yet, there are literally millions of people who read and study the Bible every day and find teaching, encouragement, assurance, and Truth within its pages.

God’s Word still changes lives.  God’s word still challenges us.  God’s word still pierces our hardened hearts.  Why?  Because the stories and characters and situations and prayers and praises and poems and confessions and all the other genres and literary styles in the Bible tell us the Truth.  The Bible shows us who God is and who we are in relation to God.

We may live in a world where we have huge buildings that reach up into the sky, vehicles that can carry us hundreds and thousands of miles, technology that allows us to communicate instantly with anyone around the world; but we are still only humans.  When we look at the true portrayal of people in the Bible, we recognize their feelings and emotions because we have those feelings and emotions.  Furthermore, the Bible shows the steadfastness of who God is.  The word of God is as sharp as a finely honed sword because it addresses us boldly and openly and honestly.  It confronts us with The Truth.

If we are sensitive to God.  If we allow God to mold us and change us, the Bible works as pruning shears and as a whet rock.  It cuts off the dead or dead-end portions of our lives.  Those areas that we do not need and that take away our energy for serving God.  It also takes the dull, blunted areas and whets them to a fine sharp edge.

Prayer:

Lord, let Your Word cut away those areas of my life that are not pleasing or useful to You.  May I become weak and malleable so that You may shape me into who You want me to be.

Amen

Waebrania 4:12

Proverbs 14:30

30A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh,

but envy makes the bones rot.

Attending to yourself and to your own leads to a more peaceful life.  How much do you actually need?  Consumerism is nothing new.  It is how trade and commerce actually started many thousands of years ago.  You have something that I want.  I can get it one of two ways: 1) I can forcibly take it from you or 2) I can trade you something you want for it.

General commerce is fine.  Supplying the needs of daily life is what we are supposed to do for ourselves and our family.  There is nothing wrong with being comfortable in our living arrangements.  There is nothing wrong with being rich if you have earned it honestly.  There is nothing wrong with owning material things.  There is nothing wrong with spending money on things that are within your means to do so.

The Bible does not condemn being rich.  It does, however, often condemn the attitudes and motives of the wealthy.  In the Old Testament prophets, the wealthy who flaunt their wealth or expect preferential treatment because of their wealth are soundly condemned.  Not because they are wealthy, but because of their actions and attitudes.  In the New Testament those who become wealthy through dishonest means are condemned as are those who put their faith in money and material things rather than in God.

Jesus’ three-year ministry was underwritten by generous wealthy friends and benefactors - among whom were Mary Magdalene and Mary, Marthy, and Lazarus.  Wealth is not an evil.  And wealthy people are not inherently evil just because of their wealth.

In fact, we see in this verse that money has nothing to do with being at peace.  Being at peace in your heart begins with knowing God as the giver of salvation.  Further, being at peace is being content with what you have and what you can honestly attain for yourself.

Being covetous and wanting what others have is sinful.  Being envious of others is sinful.  You will never find peace in wanting what others have.  How could you be?  You become too busy looking around at what everyone else has and have no time to look at and evaluate what you have.  Or, you spend all of your time wanting what everyone else has but do not work to gain what you can attain.

It must be a terrible feeling to always be wanting and desiring what others have.  You can never be at peace.  You can never know the joy of accomplishment.  You can never experience the fruit of your labor.

Desiring what others have or have achieved stunts our own dreams and ambitions.  It is okay to dream.  But let the dream be your own.  It is okay to be ambitious.  But may the work be done fairly and honestly.

Most of all, we should be desirous and covetous of what God wants us to be doing.  When we are busy seeking the will of God for us and working to be in the center of those plans, we will not have the time to be envious of others.  We will be focused on where we should be in relation to where God wants us to be.

Once we understand that, the distractions of what others have and what others do just fall to the side.  God has a purpose for our lives.  It is our responsibility to strive to be in that purpose.

Mithali 14:30

30Moyo wenye amani huupa mwili uzima,

bali wivu huozesha mifupa.

Psalm 119:11

11I have stored up your word in my heart,

that I might not sin against you.

One of the things that makes Bible reading and Bible study so important is that it grounds us in who God is.  We see how God interacts with humans.  We see how God approves or disapproves of actions, thoughts, and behaviors.  We see the consequences of not having a living, continual, and deepening relationship with God.

We also find out about ourselves.  When we are confronted with the truths in the Bible we must act on them.  Either we accept them or we reject them.  The Bible challenges us with honest depictions of people -- and ourselves.

There is no way for us to be believers without knowing the Bible.  We read and study the Bible because it shows us how we are to live as believers.  There are teachings directly addressing how we are to behave, act, interact, think, pray, and worship.

We read and study the Bible for our benefit and for the benefit of those with whom we come in contact.  We memorize passages and verses so that we may meditate on them as we pray or praise.

The Bible is much more than a rule book, but it does contain rules.  We need to read and study the Bible so that we recognize when we are going out of bounds; when we are getting close to the end line.  The more time that we spend reading and studying the Bible the less time there is for us to be drawn away by temptation.

We need to spend daily time in the Bible.  It needs to be one of the things in our daily routine.  Even when it seems hard to make the time, we need to make the time.  It is essential for our spiritual and mental health.  It is vital for how we live in our daily lives.

Zaburi 119:11

11Nimelificha neno lako moyoni mwangu

Tu me conduis, tu me défends, voilà ce qui me rassure.

Psalm 23:4

4Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil,

for you are with me;

your rod and your staff,

they comfort me.

This has to be one of the most famous and most quoted verses in the Bible.  I cannot count the number of times I’ve heard this verse preached or taught.  This is one of the ultimate expressions of God’s loving kindness towards us.  The blessed assurance that in the midst of our trials and tribulations, though all seems dark and bleak, God is there with us.

One of the reasons that this verse resounds so universally is that we all feel as though we have walked through the valley of the shadow of death.  We have all both literally and figuratively gone through that dark, deep precipice.  We know what it is to be scared, to feel lost, and to be alone.  But, there is a Savior.  There is The Good Shepherd.  The one who is there with us.  Not only walking beside us, but actually guiding us through the shadows.

We can only know the true comfort spoken of in this verse if we have accepted Jesus as our personal Savior and Lord.  It is through our personal relationship with Jesus that we can have absolutely no fear of death or evil.

Zaburi 23:4

4Hata kama nikipita katikati

ya bonde la uvuli wa mauti,

sitaogopa mabaya,

kwa maana wewe upo pamoja nami;

fimbo yako na mkongojo wako

vyanifariji.
