 Actes 2:38

38 Pierre leur dit: Repentez-vous, et que chacun de vous soit baptisé au nom de Jésus Christ, pour le pardon de vos péchés; et vous recevrez le don du Saint Esprit.

Dans les versets précédents, Pierre a prêché son premier sermon public - aux milliers de personnes qui sont venues à Jérusalem pour célébrer la Fête des Semaines (Chavouot en hébreu et Pentecôte en grec).1 2 Ceux qui ont entendu ses paroles ont été profondément enfoncés alors qu'il racontait la raison pour laquelle Jésus est venu, a été crucifié et ressuscité. Ils lui ont posé la question: «que devons-nous faire?» Le verset 38 est sa réponse.

Pierre leur dit de faire 2 choses: se repentir et se faire baptiser.

Le repentir de nos péchés est le détournement de nos péchés. Pour ce faire, nous devons reconnaître que nous sommes des pécheurs. Nous devons reconnaître que nous avons besoin du salut. Nous devons reconnaître que nous avons besoin de la grâce rédemptrice de Dieu dans nos vies. Le repentir est la décision intérieure que nous prenons dans notre vie. Celui où nous prenons personnellement la décision de suivre Jésus et ses enseignements et commandements. C'est une action interne qui se manifestera par des actions externes, mais il n'y a aucun moyen pour quelqu'un d'autre de savoir avec certitude que vous vous êtes repenti de vos péchés et que vous avez donné votre vie à Jésus. Seuls vous et Dieu le savez avec certitude. Cependant, si vous vous êtes vraiment repenti et avez accepté Jésus comme votre Sauveur et Seigneur, avez commencé à lire et à étudier la Bible et à communiquer avec la communion des croyants, les gens devraient voir une différence en vous. Vous devriez commencer à assumer davantage les caractéristiques de ce que Jésus a enseigné et commandé - nous trouvons ces choses dans les Évangiles et le reste du Nouveau Testament.

Le baptême est un symbole extérieur de l'action intérieure de la repentance. Le baptême (le mot grec βαπτίζω - baptizō) signifie submerger - ou aller complètement sous l'eau. N'est pas nécessaire pour le salut, mais c'est l'une des choses que Jésus commande. Dans Matthieu 28, Jésus dit:

19Allez, faites de toutes les nations des disciples, les baptisant au nom du Père, du Fils et du Saint Esprit, 20et enseignez-leur à observer tout ce que je vous ai prescrit. Et voici, je suis avec vous tous les jours, jusqu'à la fin du monde.

Il commande à ses disciples de faire des disciples, de les baptiser et de les instruire. Nous sommes baptisés comme un signe extérieur de notre acte intérieur de repentance en obéissance au commandement du Christ. C'est le premier signe extérieur au monde et aux autres chrétiens que nous nous sommes repentis et avons accepté Jésus comme notre Sauveur et Seigneur. Il n'y a rien dans le baptême qui fasse de nous un chrétien. Il n'y a pas de salut dans le baptême. Mais cela montre que nous sommes sérieux au sujet de notre foi retrouvée en Jésus en tant que notre Seigneur et Sauveur et que nous voulons que le monde sache que nous faisons le premier pas en passant sous la Seigneurie de Jésus en suivant son commandement.

Nous recevons le Saint-Esprit dès que nous confessons nos péchés et demandons à Jésus d'être le Seigneur et Sauveur de nos vies. En fait, le Saint-Esprit a déjà été avec vous pour pousser votre cœur à réaliser que rien de ce que vous pouvez faire ne vous permettra d'entrer en présence du Dieu Saint. Le Saint-Esprit est l'agent qui agit sur notre conscience, sur notre discernement, sur nos pensées qui nous permet de réaliser que nous sommes des pécheurs. Nous pouvons logiquement admettre que nous ne sommes pas parfaits, mais c'est la pression du Saint-Esprit sur nous qui nous conduit à réaliser que nous sommes perdus.

Une fois que nous réalisons notre état, une fois que nous réalisons que nous sommes séparés de l’amour de Dieu, nous avons la capacité et la capacité de comprendre que sans la grâce et le salut de Dieu, nous sommes éternellement séparés de Lui. À ce stade, nous nous repentons de nos voies et demandons à Jésus d'être le Seigneur et Sauveur de nos vies et le Saint-Esprit vient habiter en nous. Le Saint-Esprit est le sceau de Dieu sur nous que nous avons été achetés et payés par le sacrifice et le sang de Jésus. Le Saint-Esprit est notre consolateur. Celui qui nous apporte la paix intérieure et la joie, quelle que soit la situation extérieure. Le Saint-Esprit est celui qui nous enseigne. Celui qui nous aide dans notre compréhension lorsque nous étudions la Bible. Celui qui nous pousse à utiliser nos dons et nos talents pour glorifier Dieu dans nos relations avec les autres. Celui qui augmente notre conscience des besoins des autres.

Acts 2:38

38Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 

In the previous verses Peter has preached his first public sermon -- to the thousands who have come to Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of Weeks (Shavuot in Hebrew and Pentecost in Greek).1 2  Those who heard his words were cut to the core as he recounted the reason Jesus came and was crucified and rose again.  They asked him the question: “what must we do?”  Verse 38 is his answer.

Peter tells them to do 2 things -- repent and be baptized.  

Repenting of our sins is the turning away from our sins.  In order to do so, we must acknowledge that we are sinners.  We must acknowledge that we need salvation.  We must acknowledge that we need God’s redeeming grace in our lives.  Repenting is the inner decision that we make in our lives.  The one where we personally make the decision to follow Jesus and His teachings and commandments.  It is an internal action that will manifest itself in external actions, but there is no way for someone else to know for certain that you have repented of your sins and given your life to Jesus.  Only you and God know that for certain.  However, if you have truly repented and accepted Jesus as your Savior and Lord, started reading and studying the Bible, and started communing with the fellowship of believers, people should see a difference in you.  You should start taking on more of the characteristics of what Jesus taught and commanded -- we find these things in the Gospels and the rest of the New Testament.

Baptism is an outward symbol of the inward action of repentance.  Baptism (the greek word βαπτίζω - baptizō) means submerge - or fully go under the water.  Is not required for salvation, but it is one of the things that Jesus commands.  In Matthew 28 Jesus says, 

 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

He commands his disciples to make disciples, baptize them, and teach them.  We are baptized as an outward sign of our inward act of repentance in obedience to the command of Christ.  It is the first outward sign to the world and to other Christians that we have repented and accepted Jesus as our Savior and Lord.  There is nothing in baptism that makes us a Christian.  There is no salvation in baptism.  But, it does show that we are serious about our newfound faith in Jesus as our Lord and Savior and that we want the world to know that we are taking the first step in coming under the Lordship of Jesus by following his command.

We receive the Holy Spirit as soon as we confess our sins and ask Jesus to be the Lord and Savior of our lives.  In fact, the Holy Spirit has already been with you to prick your heart into the realization that nothing that you can do will allow you to come into the presence of the Holy God.  The Holy Spirit is the agent that acts upon our consciousness, upon our discernment, upon our thoughts that allows us to realize that we are sinners.  We may logically assent that we are not perfect, but it is the pressing of the Holy Spirit upon us that leads us to the realization that we are lost.

Once we realize our state, once we realize that we are separated from the love of God, we have the ability and capacity to understand that without God’s grace and salvation we are eternally separated from Him.  At this point, we repent of our ways and ask Jesus to be the Lord and Savior of our lives and the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us.  The Holy Spirit is the seal of God upon us that we have been bought and paid for by the sacrifice and blood of Jesus.  The Holy Spirit is our comforter.  The one who brings us inner peace and joy, no matter what the outer situation may be.  The Holy Spirit is the one who teaches us.  The one who helps us in our comprehension when we study the Bible.  The one who prompts us to use our gifts and talents to glorify God in dealing with others.  The one who heightens our awareness of the needs of others.

Peter’s words are as true today as they were almost 2000 years ago.  I encourage you to click on the link for today’s passage and read the whole message that Peter preached.  God can work through you in the same manner that He worked through Peter.

38Petro akawajibu, “Tubuni, mkabatizwe kila mmoja wenu kwa jina la Yesu Kristo, ili mpate kusamehewa dhambi zenu, nanyi mtapokea kipawa cha Roho Mtakatifu. 

Katika aya zilizopita Peter amehubiri mahubiri yake ya kwanza ya umma - kwa maelfu ambao wamekuja Yerusalemu kusherehekea Sikukuu ya Wiki (Shavuot kwa Kiebrania na Pentekoste kwa Kigiriki).1 2  Wale waliosikia maneno yake walikatishwa kiini wakati akisimulia sababu ya Yesu kuja na kusulubiwa na kufufuka. Walimwuliza swali: "tufanye nini?" Mstari wa 38 ndio jibu lake.

Petro anawaambia wafanye vitu 2 - watubu na wabatizwe.

Kutubu dhambi zetu ni kuachana na dhambi zetu. Ili kufanya hivyo, lazima tukubali kwamba sisi ni wenye dhambi. Lazima tukubali kwamba tunahitaji wokovu. Lazima tukubali kwamba tunahitaji neema ya Mungu ya kukomboa katika maisha yetu. Kutubu ni uamuzi wa ndani ambao tunafanya katika maisha yetu. Ile ambapo sisi binafsi hufanya uamuzi wa kumfuata Yesu na mafundisho na amri Zake. Ni hatua ya ndani ambayo itajidhihirisha katika matendo ya nje, lakini hakuna njia ya mtu mwingine kujua hakika kwamba umetubu dhambi zako na kumpa Yesu maisha yako. Ni wewe tu na Mungu mnajua hilo kwa hakika. Walakini, ikiwa umetubu kweli na kumkubali Yesu kama Mwokozi na Bwana wako, umeanza kusoma na kusoma Biblia, na kuanza kuzungumza na ushirika wa waumini, watu wanapaswa kuona tofauti kwako. Unapaswa kuanza kuchukua zaidi ya sifa za kile Yesu alifundisha na kuamuru - tunapata vitu hivi katika Injili na Agano Jipya lote.

Ubatizo ni ishara ya nje ya hatua ya ndani ya toba. Ubatizo (neno la kigiriki βαπτίζω - Baptizō) linamaanisha kuzama - au kwenda kabisa chini ya maji. Haihitajiki kwa wokovu, lakini ni moja ya mambo ambayo Yesu anaamuru. Katika Mathayo 28 Yesu anasema,

19Kwa sababu hii, enendeni mkawafanye mataifa yote kuwa wanafunzi, mkiwabatiza kwa Jina la Baba na la Mwana na la Roho Mtakatifu, 20nanyi wafundisheni kuyashika mambo yote niliyowaamuru ninyi. Hakika mimi niko pamoja nanyi siku zote, hadi mwisho wa nyakati.”

Anaamuru wanafunzi wake wafanye wanafunzi, wabatize, na uwafundishe. Tunabatizwa kama ishara ya nje ya matendo yetu ya ndani ya toba kwa kutii amri ya Kristo. Ni ishara ya kwanza ya nje kwa ulimwengu na kwa Wakristo wengine kwamba tumetubu na kumpokea Yesu kama Mwokozi na Bwana wetu. Hakuna kitu katika ubatizo kinachotufanya tuwe Wakristo. Hakuna wokovu katika ubatizo. Lakini, inaonyesha kuwa tunazingatia imani yetu mpya kwa Yesu kama Bwana na Mwokozi wetu na kwamba tunataka ulimwengu ujue kwamba tunachukua hatua ya kwanza kuja chini ya Uweza wa Yesu kwa kufuata amri yake.

Tunapokea Roho Mtakatifu mara tu tunapokiri dhambi zetu na kumwuliza Yesu kuwa Bwana na Mwokozi wa maisha yetu. Kwa kweli, Roho Mtakatifu tayari amekuwa na wewe kuuchoma moyo wako utambue kuwa hakuna chochote unachoweza kufanya kitakuruhusu kuja katika uwepo wa Mungu Mtakatifu. Roho Mtakatifu ndiye wakala anayetenda juu ya ufahamu wetu, juu ya utambuzi wetu, juu ya mawazo yetu ambayo inatuwezesha kutambua kwamba sisi ni wenye dhambi. Tunaweza kukiri kimantiki kuwa hatuko wakamilifu, lakini ni msukumo wa Roho Mtakatifu juu yetu ambao unatupeleka kwenye utambuzi kwamba tumepotea.

Mara tu tunapogundua hali yetu, mara tu tutakapogundua kuwa tumetengwa na upendo wa Mungu, tuna uwezo na uwezo wa kuelewa kwamba bila neema na wokovu wa Mungu tumejitenga naye milele. Kwa wakati huu, tunatubu njia zetu na kumwuliza Yesu awe Bwana na Mwokozi wa maisha yetu na Roho Mtakatifu anakuja kukaa ndani yetu. Roho Mtakatifu ni muhuri wa Mungu juu yetu kwamba tumenunuliwa na kulipwa kwa dhabihu na damu ya Yesu. Roho Mtakatifu ndiye mfariji wetu. Yule ambaye hutuletea amani ya ndani na furaha, bila kujali hali ya nje inaweza kuwa nini. Roho Mtakatifu ndiye anayetufundisha. Yule ambaye hutusaidia katika ufahamu wetu wakati tunajifunza Biblia. Yule anayetushawishi kutumia vipawa na talanta zetu kumtukuza Mungu katika kushughulika na wengine. Yule ambaye huongeza ufahamu wetu juu ya mahitaji ya wengine.
