Psaume 37:27-29 - Psalm 37:27-29 - Zaburi 37:27-29

Psaume 37:27-29

Psalm 37:27-29

27Turn away from evil and do good;

so shall you dwell forever.

28For the LORD loves justice;

he will not forsake his saints.

They are preserved forever,

but the children of the wicked shall be cut off.

29The righteous shall inherit the land

and dwell upon it forever.

We never see a full picture of God in the Bible.  We never get to see God is His entirety.  What we do see of God are those characteristics that God has chosen to reveal to us.  These characteristics give us a basis upon which to found our understanding of who God is.

We know that God is Holy and evil cannot abide in His presence.  We know that God is a God of justice and that He will not allow injustice to have dominion over the earth in perpetuity.  We know that God is gracious and merciful.  We know that God is loving and patient.  We know that God is a God of order and not of chaos.

These are things that we know.  From these things we create a code of ethics for living our daily lives.  We have the Ten Commandments as a direct guide.  I find the philosophical stances of atheism and agnosticism very interesting.  They claim that there is no “higher being” from whom ideas of justice and ethics emanate.  Yet, they claim to abide by a “human intuition” of what is right and wrong.  Just as they say that there was no “higher being” who created the universe - it was a big bang of elemental chemicals and matter that did that (but where did these chemicals and matter come from?).

Genesis 1 tells us that humans are created in the image of God.  What this means has been debated for millennia.  I believe that one possibility of what this means is that God’s morals and ethics are an intricate part of who we are as humans.  As such, we can see through the eras how humans have attempted to bring justice and order into their societies.  Setting up the boundaries of what is and is not acceptable.  In order to do this there has to be a mutual agreement of what those boundaries are.  These boundaries must already have been established in the thoughts of many in order to be so readily accepted by the vast majority.

We are told in Genesis 3 how humans attained the ability to know good from evil.  After that capacity to differentiate the two was passed down through all humanity, we have the choice.  None of us are unaccountable for our decisions.  We each make decisions each day to either do good or do evil.  Is this a simplistic view?  Maybe.  But when we do not do the good that we ought to do the result is, in effect doing evil.  The Apostle Paul tells us of this struggle in Romans 7.

As we look at these verses through the lens of the New Testament, we see that the salvation that Jesus brings us is foretold in these verses.  Choosing to do good.  Choosing to be righteous.  God is a just God.  He will reward those who do good and choose righteousness.

God has made a way for us to come before His Holiness.  Once we have accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior we are compelled by the love and grace afforded to us to do good and live righteous lives.  Not for the reward that they are, but out of the obligation of obedience of having our sins forgiven and our lives changed.

Zaburi 37:27-29

27Acha ubaya na utende wema,

nawe utaishi katika nchi milele.

28Kwa kuwa Bwana huwapenda wenye haki

naye hatawaacha waaminifu wake.

Watalindwa milele,

lakini uzao wa waovu utakatiliwa mbali.

29Wenye haki watairithi nchi,

Psalm 19:14

14Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart

be acceptable in your sight,

O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

How many times do we want to gain the acceptance of others?  How many times do we want to fit in?  How many times do we work to impress someone?  How many times do we try to get the inside track on a purchase or investment?  Do we stop to think about how that looks to God?  The amount of time that we spend dressing to impress.  The amount of time we spend trying to get in front of the right people.  The amount of time we spend hoping to get noticed.  The amount of time we spend trying to get attention.

God is there.  God is always there.  Accepting.  Loving.  Forgiving.  Comforting.  Solid.  How much time do we spend working on being humble and obedient to God?  Thinking about how we can better serve God in our home, in our community, in our church, at our job?  How much time do we spend thinking about our irreconcilable position to God?  Where nothing that we can do can bring us into the presence of The Holy God?  How much time do we spend meditating on God’s Word?  The teachings in the Old Testament.  The proclamations of those sent by God to tell the Israelites how God wanted them to live.  The stories of faith - either living in the fullness of that faith or not having any faith or all the variations in between.  How much time do we reflect on the teachings of Jesus?  On the other authors of the New Testament?  How much time do we spend reflecting on what is a Godly relationship between a man and a woman?  Between a husband and a wife?  Between parents and children?  Between Christians and non-Christians?  Among Christians?

Do we examine what we think about most of the day?  Is thinking about God only a fleeting thought or a few minutes when we set aside time to read the Bible and pray?

Are our words uplifting and encouraging?  Do we think about what we say when we come across a situation that upsets us?

Christianity is more than a tag we put on ourselves.  It is a changed life.  It is one that is different from the world.  Our words and our thoughts are indications of our level of maturity as Christians.  Are the things that we do and say acceptable to God?  God is ever present and steadfast.  We have access to His Holiness through the death of Jesus Christ who took our sins upon Himself so that the punishment for our sins would be fully paid.  If we claim that salvation, we have access to The Holy God and should heartily work to make ourselves acceptable to God in our speech and thoughts.

Zaburi 19:14

14Maneno ya kinywa changu

na mawazo ya moyo wangu,

yapate kibali mbele zako, Ee Bwana,

Proverbs 15:31-32

31The ear that listens to life-giving reproof

will dwell among the wise.

32Whoever ignores instruction despises himself,

but he who listens to reproof gains intelligence.

No one likes to be told that they are wrong.  No one likes to be told that they made a mistake.  Too many times we think that we are correct in our actions and thinking without taking time to consider if that is true or not.  We do have a measuring stick with which to judge ourselves -- Jesus.

We also see the examples in the Bible of those who unabashedly follow God’s intent and direction for their lives.  Many times we see them falter.  That is one of the most compelling reasons that argues for the authenticity of the Bible -- it shows people as they truly are -- including with all their faults, weaknesses, and failures!

These verses presuppose two things:  1) we ARE going to be wrong in our lives and 2) that we must have friends, advisors, and mentors who care enough about us to tell us that we are wrong and give us instruction on how to fix the problem.

It’s not easy to be told that you are wrong and it’s not easy to confront a friend who is wrong.

Two biblical stories come to mind with these verses:  The story of Nathan confronting King David for his adulterous and murderous affair with Bathsheba in 2 Samuel 12 and Matthew 18:15-20 where Jesus presents the procedure for dealing with someone in the church who is in the wrong.  In the case of David, we see that he decides to take responsibility for his wrongdoing and his confession and submission to doing the right thing is recorded in Psalm 51.

This is the first time that I’ve ever connected 2 Samuel 12 with Psalm 51, even though the two are intricately tied together.  I can’t tell you how many times I have sung the chorus “Create In Me A Clean Heart” (Psalm 51:1-12).  Bur reading the two together, you see David’s complete and utter obedience to God.  He confesses his mistakes.  He takes responsibility for his actions.  He begs God forgiveness and fully opens himself to being cleansed and purified of the sins that he has committed against God and humans.

David is completely submitted to the righteousness of God and understands the full ramifications of his actions actually merits that God cast David away from Him.

As friends, we need to call out others when they are doing wrong.  As friends, we must stop and listen to our friends who are admonishing us.  God gives us friends, advisors, and mentors in the faith so that we can gain from their wisdom.  So that we can gain from their insights.  So that we can gain from their experience.

David continues in Psalm 51:13-17 to say that once he has made himself right with God and humans that he will teach others so that they can know that they can repent and come back to God.

How awesome is that?  We don’t intentionally sin in order to tell others what to avoid.  Paul tells us a big definitive NO in Romans 6!  But, when we have failed, when we have sinned against God and people, we need to be held to account for that sin.  We have to take the responsibility of our actions and words.  Then beg for God’s forgiveness.  Learn from it.  Then share how God’s infinite mercy has saved us from the punishment that we deserve.

As Christians, telling others about our weaknesses is part of our testimony of the grace and mercy of God.  We do not attain salvation through our own devices.  We do not overcome temptation by our own will.  We do not live according to the laws of God by structuring our own lives.  We can only do these things through the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives.  The Spirit of God that comes to indwell us when we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.

The Christian life is one of being vulnerable and malleable.  We must be vulnerable and allow others to get close to us in order that we may show them the love of God.  We must be malleable in order to allow God to transform us more and more into the likeness of Christ.

Mithali 15:31-32

31Yeye asikilizaye maonyo yatoayo uzima

atakuwa miongoni mwa wenye hekima.

32Yeye anayedharau maonyo hujidharau mwenyewe,

bali yeyote anayekubali maonyo hupata ufahamu.

Exodus 20:16

16“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Simple, succinct, and declarative.  Don’t lie about your neighbor.  In an earlier blog we talked about who our neighbors are.  So, don’t lie.  Period.

It is much easier to simply tell the truth.  Mark Twain is credited with saying, “If you tell the truth you don't have to remember anything.”  If you tell the truth you don’t have to figure out which lie you told to which person.

As with most absolutes, there are exceptions -- if you were hiding Jews in Nazi occupied territory during World War II -- of course you would lie to save their lives.  When faced with an abusive spouse or parent, telling them a lie to protect the person they are abusing is not wrong.

Lying for selfish gain.  Lying to direct punishment to someone else.  Lying to bring harm to another.  Lying to put someone at a disadvantage.  Lying to create a volatile or disruptive situation.  Lying to get back at someone.  These are the things that we are to avoid.

Notice how these things circle back to loving your neighbor as yourself.  Thinking of others first.  In the majority of cases, lying does neither of these.

Further, lying will bring into doubt everything that you have ever done or said.  One lie can destroy any credibility that you have.  Once you have lied and been caught, you lose any respect that you may have garnered.

The best policy is to follow the commandment -- do not lie.

Kutoka 20:16

16Usimshuhudie jirani yako uongo.
