Jacques 3:7-9

7Toutes les espèces de bêtes sauvages, d'oiseaux, de reptiles, d'animaux marins peuvent être domptées et ont été domptées par l'espèce humaine ; 8mais la langue, aucun homme ne peut la dompter : c'est un fléau incontrôlable ; elle est pleine d'un venin mortel. 9Par elle nous bénissons celui qui est Seigneur et Père, et par elle nous maudissons les humains qui sont à la ressemblance de Dieu.

Au fil des décennies, des études ont prouvé que les mots ont du pouvoir. Nous pouvons être influencés à la fois par des choses grandes et terribles par la parole. Nous pouvons louer ou réprimander. Nous pouvons apaiser ou nous pouvons agiter. Notre ton, notre inflexion, notre volume - tout démontre nos diverses émotions et nos pensées.

Ce que fait la langue, c'est exprimer ce qui est en nous. Les mots ne se forment pas d'eux-mêmes. Ils viennent de nos pensées et de nos sentiments. Ce qui les parle, c'est les faire connaître aux auditeurs. L'une des techniques utilisées pour amener les criminels à avouer est de leur poser une série de questions inoffensives où le sujet entrera dans un schéma de réponse automatique. Ensuite, l'interrogateur pose une ou deux questions sur le crime présumé commis. Le sujet est sur une lancée répondant aux questions inoffensives presque par cœur et l'esprit transfère simplement cette information par la langue. Lorsqu'une question pertinente est posée, l'esprit répond automatiquement - il y a peu ou pas de temps pour réfléchir - et généralement, la vérité éclate.

Les choses que nous disons sont des choses que nous avons déjà pensé. Puisque c'est le cas, quand nous disons du mal des autres, maudissons-les, comme le dit ce verset, nous avons déjà eu cette pensée. Ce n'est pas quelque chose de nouveau pour nous. Puisque c'est le cas, nous devons réellement surveiller et modifier notre façon de penser.

Si nous pensons d'une manière mondaine, nous parlerons des choses d'une manière mondaine. Si nous pensons à la manière du Royaume, nous parlerons des choses à la manière du Royaume. Tout dépend de l'entrée dans notre esprit. Paul nous exhorte à :

4Réjouissez-vous toujours dans le Seigneur ; je le répète, réjouissez-vous ! 5Que votre attitude conciliante soit connue de tous. Le Seigneur est proche. 6Ne vous inquiétez de rien ; mais, en tout, par la prière et la supplication, avec des actions de grâces, faites connaître à Dieu vos demandes. 7Et la paix de Dieu, qui surpasse toute pensée, gardera votre cœur et votre intelligence en Jésus-Christ.

8Au reste, mes frères, que tout ce qui est vrai, tout ce qui est digne, tout ce qui est juste, tout ce qui est pur, tout ce qui est aimable, tout ce qui mérite l'approbation, ce qui est moralement bon et digne de louange soit l'objet de vos pensées ; 9ce que vous avez appris, reçu, entendu et vu en moi, mettez-le en pratique. Et le Dieu de la paix sera avec vous.

Paul donne la directive positive en opposition à l'injonction négative de Jacques. Les deux disent la même chose - pensez aux choses de Dieu !

Prière

Cher Seigneur, s'il te plaît, aide-nous à garder notre esprit et nos pensées sur toi et ton royaume. Aide-nous à être conscients non seulement de la façon dont nous parlons, mais aussi de la façon dont nous pensons. Aide-nous à remplir nos esprits et nos cœurs de la sagesse du Royaume et non de la sagesse terrestre. Alors que David priait : “Que les paroles de ma bouche et le murmure de mon cœur soient agréés de toi, SEIGNEUR, mon rocher et mon rédempteur !” (Psaume 19:15)

7All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.

Over the decades studies have proven that words have power.  We can be influenced to both great and terrible things by the spoken word.  We can praise or we can berate.  We can soothe or we can agitate.  Our tone, inflection, volume - all demonstrate our various emotions and our thoughts.

What the tounge does is express what is inside us.  Words do not form of their own.  They come from out thoughts and feelings.  What speaking them does is make them known to the hearers.  One of the techniques used to get criminals to confess is asking them a series of innocuous questions where the subject will get into a pattern of answering automatically.  Then the interrogator throws in a question or two about the suspected crime committed.  The subject is on a roll answering the innocuous questions almost by rote and the mind is simply transferring that information through the tongue.  When a pertinent question is asked, the mind answers automatically - there is little or no time for thought - and usually, the truth pops out.

The things that we say are things that we have already thought.  Since that is the case, when we speak ill of others, curse them, as this verse says, we have already had that thought.  It is not something that is new to us.  Since this is the case, we need to actually monitor and shift our way of thinking.

If we are thinking in a worldly manner, we will speak things in a worldly way.  If we are thinking in a Kingdom manner, we will speak things in a Kingdom way.  It all depends on the input into our mind.  Paul exhorts us to:

4Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

8Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.    Philippians 4

Paul is giving the positive directive in opposition to the negative injunction of James.  Both are saying the same thing - think on the things of God!

Prayer

Dear Lord, please help us to keep our mind and thoughts on You and Your Kingdom.  Help us to be aware of not only the way we speak, but the way we think.  Help us to fill our minds and hearts with Kingdom wisdom and not earthly wisdom.  As David prayed, “May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14)

7 Maana kila aina ya wanyama, na ya ndege, na ya vitambaavyo, na ya vitu vilivyomo baharini, vinafugika, navyo vimekwisha kufugwa na wanadamu.

8 Bali ulimi hakuna awezaye kuufuga; ni uovu usiotulia, umejaa sumu iletayo mauti.

9 Kwa huo twamhimidi Mungu Baba yetu, na kwa huo twawalaani wanadamu waliofanywa kwa mfano wa Mungu.

Kwa miaka mingi tafiti zimethibitisha kuwa maneno yana nguvu. Tunaweza kuathiriwa na mambo makuu na ya kutisha na maneno yaliyosemwa. Tunaweza kusifu au tunaweza kukemea. Tunaweza kutuliza au tunaweza kuchafuka. Sauti yetu, unyenyekevu, sauti - zote zinaonyesha hisia zetu anuwai na mawazo yetu.

Kile ambacho tounge inafanya ni kuelezea kile kilicho ndani yetu. Maneno hayafanyiki wao wenyewe. Zinatoka kwa mawazo na hisia. Kile kuzungumza nao hufanya ni kuwajulisha wasikilizaji. Mbinu moja inayotumika kuwafanya wahalifu wakiri ni kuwauliza maswali kadhaa yasiyokuwa na hatia ambapo mhusika ataingia katika mtindo wa kujibu kiatomati. Halafu yule anayemhoji anatupa swali moja au mawili juu ya uhalifu unaoshukiwa kufanywa. Mada iko kwenye roll inayojibu maswali yasiyokuwa na hatia karibu kwa kukariri na akili inahamisha habari hiyo kupitia ulimi. Wakati swali linalofaa linaulizwa, akili hujibu kiatomati - kuna wakati mdogo au hakuna wakati wa kufikiria - na kawaida, ukweli hujitokeza.

Vitu tunavyosema ni vitu ambavyo tayari tumefikiria. Kwa kuwa ndivyo ilivyo, tunapowasemea wengine vibaya, laana, kama aya hii inavyosema, tayari tumekuwa na wazo hilo. Sio jambo geni kwetu. Kwa kuwa hii ndio kesi, tunahitaji kufuatilia na kubadili njia yetu ya kufikiria.

Ikiwa tunafikiria kwa njia ya kidunia, tutazungumza mambo kwa njia ya kidunia. Ikiwa tunafikiria kwa njia ya Ufalme, tutazungumza mambo kwa njia ya Ufalme. Yote inategemea pembejeo kwenye akili zetu. Paulo anatuhimiza:

4Furahini katika Bwana sikuzote; tena nasema, Furahini. 5Upole wenu na ujulikane na watu wote. Bwana yu karibu. 6Msijisumbue kwa neno lo lote; bali katika kila neno kwa kusali na kuomba, pamoja na kushukuru, haja zenu na zijulikane na Mungu. 7Na amani ya Mungu, ipitayo akili zote, itawahifadhi mioyo yenu na nia zenu katika Kristo Yesu.

8Hatimaye, ndugu zangu, mambo yo yote yaliyo ya kweli, yo yote yaliyo ya staha, yo yote yaliyo ya haki, yo yote yaliyo safi, yo yote yenye kupendeza, yo yote yenye sifa njema; ukiwapo wema wo wote, ikiwapo sifa nzuri yo yote, yatafakarini hayo. 9Mambo mliyojifunza kwangu na kuyapokea, na kuyasikia na kuyaona kwangu, yatendeni hayo; na Mungu wa amani atakuwa pamoja nanyi. Wafilipi 4

Paulo anatoa maagizo mazuri kwa kupinga maagizo mabaya ya Yakobo. Wote wawili wanasema kitu kimoja - fikiria juu ya mambo ya Mungu!

Maombi

Mpendwa Bwana, tafadhali tusaidie kuweka akili zetu na mawazo yako juu yako na Ufalme Wako. Tusaidie kufahamu sio tu njia tunayosema, lakini njia tunayofikiria. Tusaidie kujaza akili na mioyo yetu na hekima ya Ufalme na sio hekima ya kidunia. Wakati Daudi aliomba, “Maneno ya kinywa changu, Na mawazo ya moyo wangu, Yapate kibali mbele zako, Ee Bwana, Mwamba wangu, na mwokozi wangu (Zaburi 19:14).
