2 Timothée 4:7

7J'ai combattu le bon combat, je suis allé jusqu'au bout de la course, j'ai gardé la foi!

Pour moi, c'est l'un des passages les plus émouvants de l'Écriture. De l'écriture de Luc dans Actes à 2 Timothée de la main de Paul, nous avons vu tout l'arc de la vie chrétienne de Paul. Paul avait toujours été une personne zélée. Il était zélé dans ses études. Il était zélé dans la défense du judaïsme. Il était zélé après être parvenu à la connaissance salvifique de Jésus-Christ. Il avait une formation universitaire. Il avait le lecteur. Il a vécu sa foi. Il comprenait profondément les Écritures hébraïques (l'Ancien Testament) qui étaient sa seule Bible. Sa compréhension de qui était Jésus sous forme humaine reposait à la fois sur son expérience personnelle avec Jésus sur le chemin de Damas et sur sa profonde connaissance des Écritures hébraïques.

Pour moi, le ministère de Paul est curieux parce qu’il était un juif si érudit, mais sa cible principale dans son évangélisation était les gentils. Les Juifs n'ont jamais vraiment été évangélistes; c'est-à-dire qu'ils n'ont jamais fait tout leur possible pour faire du prosélytisme. La foi juive a toujours été une religion familiale héréditaire. Les enfants d'Abraham. Ils ont adoré le Dieu de leurs pères - Abraham, Isaac et Jacob. Par les conquêtes d’autres nations, les Juifs avaient été largement disséminés dans le monde connu au moment de la naissance de Paul. En effet, Paul lui-même n'est même pas né dans les limites de l'ancien royaume israélite.

Ainsi, nous avons Paul, un érudit juif exceptionnel qui était zélé pour sa foi - d'abord en tant que juif puis en tant que chrétien né de nouveau. Paul a travaillé sans relâche pendant presque 30 ans après sa rencontre avec Jésus pour enseigner et prêcher au sujet de Jésus le Messie juif parmi les gentils.

Je pense que nous manquons l'importance de ceci et la manière miraculeuse dont Dieu a utilisé Paul. Les gentils connaissaient plus que probablement des juifs, mais pour la plupart, les juifs étaient considérés comme athées car ils n'avaient aucune représentation de Dieu. Paul, dans son enseignement et sa prédication aux gentils, a dû surmonter plusieurs obstacles énormes: 1) il n'y a qu'un seul Dieu, 2) il n'y a pas de sacrifice que vous puissiez faire pour apaiser ce Dieu, 3) vous devez changer tout votre chemin de penser pour devenir chrétien. Non seulement Dieu a utilisé Paul pour enseigner et prêcher le message du salut par la repentance et la foi en Jésus, mais l'œuvre du Saint-Esprit dans le message que Paul a livré a été un franc succès. En fait, ce fut un tel succès que nous utilisons encore l’enseignement de Paul aujourd’hui!

En effet, Paul a fait et garde toujours la foi. Le fait qu'un homme - avec une solide éducation et une solide formation théologique, qui était un citoyen romain (essentiellement un passeport lui permettant d'aller n'importe où dans le monde), et non seulement s'est soutenu dans le ministère, mais s'est assuré d'être le fer de lance la collecte pour l'église de Jérusalem, et en plus de cela, n'a jamais pris la position que c'était ses enseignements et son autorité qui étaient la chose la plus importante. Il n'y a pas de «paulianité». Il n’existe pas de «7 secrets de Paul dans la vie spirituelle». Il n'y a pas de temple ou d'église de Paul. Même s'il était considéré comme l'un des chrétiens les plus influents de son temps, Paul a enseigné un message:

Galates 6:14

14Mais loin de moi de me vanter, sinon de la croix de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ, par laquelle le monde m'a été crucifié, et moi au monde.

Je vous demande de me trouver fidèle dans les tâches que vous m'avez confiées. Puisse tout ce que je fais toujours vous pointer. Vous êtes celui qui m'a donné mes dons, mes talents et mes capacités. C'est à cause de ce que tu as fait pour moi que j'ai la vie éternelle. Je te dois tout. Ce que j'ai dit, ce que j'ai médité devant toi, j'espère que cela te sera agréable, Seigneur, mon rocher, mon défenseur!  (Psaume 19:15)

2 Timothy 4:7

7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

For me, this is one of the most moving passages of scripture.  From Luke’s writing in Acts to 2 Timothy by Paul’s hand we have seen the full arc of Paul’s Christian life.  Paul had always been a zealous person.  He was zealous in his studies.  He was zealous in defending Judaism.  He was zealous after he came to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.  He had the academic background.  He had the drive.  He lived out his faith.  He deeply understood the Hebrew Scriptures (the Old Testament) which were his only Bible.  His understanding of who Jesus was in human form was based both on his personal experience with Jesus on the road to Damascus and his deep knowledge of the Hebrew Scriptures.

For me, Paul’s ministry is curious because he was such a learned Jew but his main target in his evangelism was the gentiles.  The Jews have never really been evangelistic; that is, they have never gone out of their way to proselytize.  The Jewish faith has always been a hereditary familial religion.  The children of Abraham.  They worshipped the God of their fathers - Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.  By the conquests of other nations, the Jews had been widely disseminated throughout the known world by the time of Paul’s birth.  Indeed, Paul himself was not even born within the boundaries of the ancient Israelite realm.

So, we have Paul, an outstanding Jewish scholar who was zealous for his faith - first as a Jew then as a born-again Christian.  Paul worked tirelessly for most of 30 years after his encounter with Jesus to teach and preach about Jesus the Jewish Messiah among the gentiles.  

I think that we miss the importance of this and the miraculous way that God used Paul.  The gentiles more than likely knew some Jews, but for the most part, the Jews were considered atheists since they had no representation of God.  Paul, in his teaching and preaching to the gentiles had to overcome several huge hurdles: 1) there is only One God, 2) there is no sacrifice that you can make to appease this God, 3) you have to change your entire way of thinking in order to become a Christian.  Not only did God use Paul to teach and preach the message of salvation through repentance and faith in Jesus, but the work of the Holy Spirit in the message that Paul delivered was wildly successful.  In fact, it was so successful that we still use Paul’s teaching today!

Indeed, Paul did and still does keep the faith.  The fact that one man - with a solid education and theological background, who was a Roman Citizen (basically a passport allowing him to go anywhere in the world), and not only supported himself in the ministry, but made sure to be the one spearheading the collection for the church in Jerusalem, and on top of that, never took the attitude that it was his teachings and his authority that was the most important thing.  There is no “Paulianity.”  There is no “Paul’s 7 Secrets to the Spiritual Life.”  There is no Temple or Church of Paul.  Even as he was seen as one of the most influential Christians in his own time Paul taught one message - 

Galatians 6:14

14But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

I ask that you may find me faithful in the tasks that You have given me.  May all that I do always point to You.  You are the One who has given me my gifts, talents, and abilities.  It is because of what You have done for me that I have eternal life.  I owe you everything.  Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight,  O LORD, my rock and my redeemer. (Ps. 19:14)

Kwangu, hii ni moja wapo ya vifungu vya kusonga vya maandiko. Kuanzia uandishi wa Luka kwenye Matendo hadi 2 Timotheo kwa mkono wa Paulo tumeona safu kamili ya maisha ya Kikristo ya Paulo. Sikuzote Paulo alikuwa mtu mwenye bidii. Alikuwa mwenye bidii katika masomo yake. Alikuwa mwenye bidii katika kutetea Uyahudi. Alikuwa na bidii baada ya kupata ujuzi wa kuokoa wa Yesu Kristo. Alikuwa na historia ya masomo. Alikuwa na gari. Aliishi kwa imani yake. Alielewa sana Maandiko ya Kiebrania (Agano la Kale) ambayo ndiyo Biblia yake pekee. Uelewa wake wa Yesu alikuwa nani katika umbo la kibinadamu ulitegemea uzoefu wake wa kibinafsi na Yesu kwenye barabara ya Dameski na ufahamu wake wa kina wa Maandiko ya Kiebrania.

Kwangu mimi, huduma ya Paulo inadadisi kwa sababu alikuwa Myahudi aliyejifunza lakini lengo lake kuu katika uinjilishaji wake lilikuwa ni watu wa mataifa. Wayahudi hawajawahi kweli kuwa wainjilisti; Hiyo ni, hawajawahi kwenda nje ya njia yao ya kugeuza watu imani. Imani ya Kiyahudi daima imekuwa dini ya urithi wa kifamilia. Wana wa Ibrahimu. Walimwabudu Mungu wa baba zao - Ibrahimu, Isaka na Yakobo. Kwa ushindi wa mataifa mengine, Wayahudi walikuwa wamesambazwa sana ulimwenguni kote inayojulikana wakati wa kuzaliwa kwa Paulo. Kwa kweli, Paulo mwenyewe hakuzaliwa hata ndani ya mipaka ya eneo la kale la Israeli.

Kwa hivyo, tuna Paulo, msomi mashuhuri wa Kiyahudi ambaye alikuwa na bidii kwa imani yake - kwanza kama Myahudi kisha kama Mkristo aliyezaliwa mara ya pili. Paulo alifanya kazi bila kuchoka kwa zaidi ya miaka 30 baada ya kukutana na Yesu kufundisha na kuhubiri juu ya Yesu Masihi wa Kiyahudi kati ya mataifa.

Nadhani tunakosa umuhimu wa hii na njia ya miujiza ambayo Mungu alimtumia Paulo. Watu wa mataifa walikuwa wanawajua Wayahudi wengine, lakini kwa sehemu kubwa, Wayahudi walichukuliwa kama wasioamini Mungu kwa kuwa hawakuwa na uwakilishi wa Mungu. Paulo, katika mafundisho yake na kuwahubiria watu wa mataifa alipaswa kushinda vizuizi kadhaa vikubwa: 1) kuna Mungu Mmoja tu, 2) hakuna dhabihu ambayo unaweza kutoa ili kumfurahisha Mungu huyu, 3) lazima ubadilishe njia yako yote ya kufikiria ili uwe Mkristo. Sio tu kwamba Mungu alimtumia Paulo kufundisha na kuhubiri ujumbe wa wokovu kupitia toba na imani kwa Yesu, lakini kazi ya Roho Mtakatifu katika ujumbe ambao Paulo aliwasilisha ilifanikiwa sana. Kwa kweli, ilifanikiwa sana hivi kwamba bado tunatumia mafundisho ya Paulo leo!

Kwa kweli, Paulo alifanya na bado anaendelea kuiweka imani. Ukweli kwamba mtu mmoja - mwenye elimu thabiti na malezi ya kitheolojia, ambaye alikuwa Raia wa Kirumi (kimsingi pasipoti iliyomruhusu aende popote ulimwenguni), na hakujisaidia tu katika huduma, lakini alihakikisha kuwa ndiye anayeongoza ukusanyaji kwa kanisa la Yerusalemu, na juu ya hayo, kamwe haukuchukua mtazamo kwamba ni mafundisho yake na mamlaka yake ndiyo ilikuwa jambo la muhimu zaidi. Hakuna "Ukristo". Hakuna "Siri 7 za Paulo kwa Maisha ya Kiroho." Hakuna Hekalu au Kanisa la Paulo. Hata kama alionekana kama mmoja wa Wakristo wenye ushawishi mkubwa wakati wake Paulo alifundisha ujumbe mmoja -

14Mungu apishie mbali nisije nikajivunia kitu chochote isipokuwa msalaba wa Bwana wetu Yesu Kristo, ambaye kwa yeye ulimwengu umesulubiwa kwangu, nami nimesulubiwa kwa ulimwengu.
